The Thin Wall

After reading The Thin Wall, consider these questions:

  • Is the author’s assertion that U.S. prisoners-of-war were secretly transferred to the Soviet Union fact or fiction?
  • Would the U.S. government ever knowingly abandon its servicemen? If so, did this happen in Vietnam?
  • What is your personal and political freedom worth? Can you provide an example of the “price of freedom” paid by some of the characters?
  • Do you believe the author’s bleak portrayal of life inside an Eastern Bloc nation is accurate? (In this case Czechoslovakia)
  • How would you have responded to Col. Dal’s tyranny  had you lived in the village of Mersk?
  • Dr. Milan Husak struggled with his patriotism. Was his rationale for “not wanting to get involved” fair?
  • Were the fates of Col. Dal and Dr. Husak predetermined by Ayna Sahhat’s curse?
  • At the end of the story, Ayna sees a peacock in the village square. What is the significance of this?
  • The blind veteran character only appears at the beginning and the end of the story, why do you think this is so?
  • What are some of the political realities that existed in 1968 that are present today between Russia and The United States?
